Advancements in industrial Ethernet switching technology have greatly improved the reliability in Ethernet communication. With the automation industry rapidly transitioning to Ethernet as a communication standard, it is vital that variable speed drive (VSD, VFD) systems do the same. Products now are helping to lead this transition by providing an Ethernet process controller for new and existing variable speed drive systems.
Ethernet is now a days inevitable. I worked on Siemens make drives and now sinamics series drive control unit are available with integrated profinet port . But lots of variable frequency drives are to be interconnected then for Ethernet switch to be introduces where as for profibus or modbus etc just looping required. transmission speed, ease of installation and wide acceptance make Ethernet ahead.
The next wave is "Dual Port" Ethernet for what is called 'Device Level Ring" (DLR) topology to help with fault tolerance when the possibility exists for damage to happen to cabling. All of Rockwell's newest variable speed drives are coming out with on-board EtherNet I/P ports built-in, or an option card is available for Dual Port DLR.
